Do I need reference letter to get admission at MIT?

Do I need some references to get apply for admission at MIT? Please suggest me whether I need reference letters or not.
It depends on your course whether you need letter of reference or not. For some programs letter of reference is compulsory. For admission in some courses, you may even need two or more reference letters. Reference letter is generally written by previous instructors or employer of an applicant.
