Admission Requirements and Procedures for MBA in US Universities

Question Description
What are the basic requirements that need to be fulfilled to do MBA in USA? What are the eligibility criteria for MBA application? What documents are required during application process? Do I need to appear for any standardized test or not?

Admission process to join MBA program in US universities is similar to admission process to join other post graduate level programs. You must be concerned about the admission process - one year to one and half year earlier from the date of admission. It is because getting admitted for MBA in US business schools is time consuming, effort consuming, and expensive process. Time and effort consuming in the sense that most of the business school usually ask for your scores of GMAT and TOEFL/IELTS tests and it takes a lot of time and effort for you to prepare for such tests. The desirable date to appear for such tests will also be very difficult to arrange. Also, it takes some time to get score after appearing for such tests. Expensive in the sense that the application fees just to apply to business schools is very high. Also, you need to make sure that your documents will reach to the concerned universities in time. That means you have to pay a considerable amount of money to the courier service providers.

Application Procedure:

Each business schools have its own admission procedure and application requirements. You can visit respected website of such business schools to review their admission procedure.

However, these are general application procedure in most the business schools in USA:

The first step of applying to the business schools in US begins with the selection of the business schools and requesting and filling up application form. Application forms can either be directly downloaded from the respected website of the business school or will be sent to you through post after filling up the requisition form. Some of the business schools may have system to fill up form directly through their website. If your business school sends you the application form, you have to fill up the form.

In general, information to be filled up in the application form is:

1. Your Personal Details:
Such as full name, address, nationality, date of birth, marital status, gender, etc.),

2. Your Academic Career:
Such as qualification/degree achieved, university/board which awarded you such degree, stream/major you have taken, school/college you have attended, division/merits you achieved, percentage/grade obtained, joined and completed date, etc.

3. Awards and Recognition:
List of significant scholastic honors and academic prizes received.

4. Activities:
Such as activity, date of participation, position held, etc.

5. Work Experience:
Such as employer’s details, address and contact details, job title, duration of the job, salary, etc.

6. Referee:
You may be asked to provide letter of reference by any individuals who you think can supply supporting evidence of your academic or work experience.

The business schools in USA also ask for other related documents to check your eligibility in their MBA programs. The documents include:

  • Attested copy of mark sheets of your previous level studies
  • Proof of proficiency in English if your first language is not English (Score of TOEFL or IELTS)
  • GMAT score (some may also accept GRE scores)
  • Attested copy of citizenship certificate/card
  • Work experience details
  • Letter of recommendation
  • Statement of Purpose or Essay
  • Your photographs, etc.

After collecting all these documents, you have to send the filled up application form with these documents including the application fee within the application deadline to the respective address of your business school.

Once your application form and documents are received by the business school officials, they review your application and evaluate your application and documents in terms of their requirement. If your application and documents meets their admission criteria, they may accept you in their MBA program or may call for the personal interview. Remember one thing, these business schools are looking for those candidates who have potential to influence others, leadership qualities, and work experience.
